Umaid Bhawan Palace

Umaid Bhawan Palace was established in the year 1977 as a heritage hotel in Jodhpur. Umaid Bhawan is one of the top heritage hotels in India and very best hotel in Jodhpur. Umaid Bhawan Palace in Jodhpur is one of the largest and grandest private residences in the world. The Umaid Bhawan Palace had a very unique history. The Umaid Bhawan Palace is the only palace which was built in the 20th century as a famine relief project. Under this project around 3000 artisans were given employment. The palace was built in about 14 years.

The palace consumed one million square feet of the finest marble. This palace is a splendid example of Indo-colonial and the art deco style of the thirties.

History of Umaid Bhawan

Maharaja Umaid Singh, an admirer of western lifestyles hired a famous Edwardian architect, Henry Vaughan Lanchester, for Umaid Bhavan Palace, Jodhpur. The maharaja got the palace constructed with the intention of providing employment to famine stricken farmers. The palace consists of 347 rooms. Jodhpur Umaid Bhawan Palace was one of the last palaces to be built in India.
The attractions of the palace include the Throne Room (housing fascinating Ramayana murals), a wood-paneled library, a private museum; an indoor swimming pool, a Billiards room, tennis courts and marble squash courts. The Palace has now been converted into five star deluxe palace hotel. The Umaid Bhavan Palace of Rajasthan also houses a museum. On display, in the museum, are an array of weapons, stuffed leopards, clocks and a huge banner presented by Queen Victoria.

Umaid Bhawan palace now runs as a hotel, though part of it is retained as museum and other part as royal residence. The sculpted lawns with sandstone pavements and bouquets of bougainvillea bushes are a soothing sight in this palace. This magnificent palace has a unique feature. The unique feature is that some of the old retainers of the royal household are still there to serve the needs of present day guests with the gracious hospitality. In winter, theme dinners are often organized in the Dal Badal, a 100 year old intricately designed hunting tent, which is set up in the palace. There is a choice of 94 rooms and suites. Each room appointed with the furniture originally created for the Palace. The Regal Suites which were originally used by Maharaja Umaid Singh and his Maharani are also part of this palace. The delicious buffet lunch and dinner is laid out daily at the Marwar Hall.
