Fateh Sagar Lake
Fateh Sagar lake is surrounded by hills was constructed Maharana Jai Singh in the year 1687. Due to heavy rain the old embankment of the lake was swept away then Maharana Fateh Singh reconstructed this lake in the year 1888 so the name given to this Lake is Fateh Sagar Lake.
The Fateh Sagar Lake is a serene lake, constructed towards the north of Lake Pichola. It was constructed for agricultural purposes, as a medium-sized perennial storage reservoir. This lake was built by Maharana Jai Singh in 1678, who had already constructed the famous Jaisamand Lake, southeast of the city of Udaipur.
Fateh Sagar Lake happens to be the second largest of Udaipur’s four man-made lakes. The special feature of Fateh Sagar is that it is connected by a canal to the Rang Sagar Lake. The lake is 2400 metres long and 1600 metres wide with a deepest point of 11.5 metres. When the lake is full it covers an area of about 1sq.km and it is fed by the river Ahar.
This lake got its name of King Fateh Singh who rebuilt its dam. About 200 years ago, a violent storm and heavy rainfall damaged the water reservoir, leading to loss of lives and property at a spot called Sahelion-ki-bari gardens. To Maharana Fateh Singh goes the credit of reconstructing the damaged reservoir at a cost of 6 lakh rupees, and in the same year the lake was renamed as Fateh Sagar Lake.
A drive through the complete circumference of the lake through the Moti Magri road provides a beautiful and enchanting view of the lake in all its splendour with the Aravallis encircling it. Pichola Lake, Madar Lake, and Badi Lake form the main causeways to the Fateh Sagar Lake. The lake has three islands, which are frequented by tourists. The largest of the three islands is a verdant garden named Nehru Park. The park also houses a restaurant and zoo.
Fateh Sagar Lake has three intake channels and an overflow channel for supporting it during rainy seasons. In present times, besides being a tourist attraction, it is the major source of water supply to the city of Udaipur. This island can be reached by a motor boat. A magnificent water-jet fountain is present in the second island and the third houses the Udaipur Solar Observatory, which is the largest of its kind in Asia. A visit to this picturesque lake, and a boat cruise on its placid waters, overlooked by green hills, will be a pleasant experience for all! Specially the sunsets on this lake are truly bewitching and are likely to stay in your memory for a lifetime.
